About This Place

Nestled in the heart of San Marcos, Texas, The Root Cellar Cafe is a truly inviting spot where breakfast, brunch, and classic comfort foods come alive in a charming, rustic setting. This beloved local gem offers a wonderfully diverse menu that delights both traditionalists and adventurous palates alike—serving everything from hearty Southern staples to fresh, inventive twists on brunch favorites.

Guests step into a cozy, cellar-like atmosphere that effortlessly blends old-world charm with modern comfort. The warm wood tones and inviting lighting complement the relaxed yet chic vibe, making it both the perfect place for a leisurely weekend brunch or an intimate breakfast rendezvous. Large windows at sidewalk level flood the space with natural light, while the basement cellar dining area evokes a quaint, tucked-away feel that adds to the overall dining experience.

The menu at The Root Cellar Cafe is a celebration of Texan and Southern flavors, skillfully perfected. Their Fried Chicken and Waffles offer a sublime marriage of crispy, pecan-breaded chicken paired with golden waffles, drizzled in your choice of housemade maple syrup or a tantalizing Sriracha honey glaze. This dish alone is a highlight that lingers on the tongue, balancing sweet, savory, and subtle spice in every bite.

Not to be missed is the Bourbon Pecan Chicken, a succulent chicken breast encrusted in pecan breading and topped with a rich Kentucky bourbon sauce that strikes the perfect note of warmth and depth, accompanied by two thoughtfully prepared sides. For those seeking lighter fare, their Antonelli's Cheese Plate offers a sophisticated and flavorful option, showcasing Texas cheeses with fresh accompaniments.

The Root Cellar Cafe is also known for its unique sandwiches such as the Caribbean Stacker—a robust stack of grilled turkey, ham, bacon, and caramelized grilled onions, elevated by a jalapeño-pineapple sauce and melted Swiss on toasted sourdough that delivers layers of sweet, smoky, and tangy flavors.

Vegetarians and health-conscious diners will feel equally catered to with options like the Beet Burger and freshly tossed salads that burst with farm-fresh ingredients, as well as gluten-free and vegan-friendly sides like oatmeal with fruit or creamy cheddar grits that bring comfort without compromise. The thoughtful inclusion of customizable B.Y.O.B. (Build Your Own Breakfast) sides lets everyone tailor their meal exactly to their liking.

Adding to the charm, The Root Cellar Cafe's beverage selection is finely curated with refreshing choices such as Orange Juice Mimosas and an inviting wine list that pairs beautifully with your meal, offering the perfect start or accompaniment to your morning gathering.

Reviewers consistently praise the impeccable service here, highlighting attentive and warm staff who elevate every visit. As one guest fondly recalled, “Gummie was absolutely amazing—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming,” which truly encapsulates the welcoming spirit of the cafe. Even with occasional minor setbacks like slow service or a dash of overly salty soup, the overall experience, from large portions to the clean and family-friendly environment (including a changing table in the bathroom), leaves visitors feeling valued and eager to return.

I'm going to give it a 5 even though the service was slow and the soup was very salty. There were more pros than cons, though. Large portions and chic atmosphere! Clean bathrooms with a changing table as well. Plenty of options for food but not overwhelming.

We had a delicious breakfast at Root Cellar Cafe, and everything from the food to the atmosphere was outstanding. The flavors were fresh, well-prepared, and truly comforting—exactly what you want for a great start to the day. The service made the experience even better. Gummie was absolutely amazing—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. If you’re looking for great food paired with exceptional service, Root Cellar Cafe is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!

First time here on 6/2/2025. Celebration lunch for 52nd anniversary. Great service. Lots of attention but not pressing. Good menu options. My wife had the pesto pasta and salad. I went with the Brewhouse Burger. Good portions. Fun place to eat with windows at sidewalk level. Parking was easy at mid-day but could be tricky early.

Really cozy spot for brunch thats right off of the main square of San Marcos. The place has an old rustic atmosphere in its basement cellar dining area. The service is great and the food is pretty tasty.

Oh my GOODNESS!! The Root seller has done it again. My wife and I are excellent cooks and everyone raves about our cooking but when I wanna go to a place for a breakfast and want something excellent, I come here! My go to is there Brazilian French toast. I add fresh strawberries and blueberries to it with a side of sausage patties and it is the chef’s kiss. The flavors are vibrant, and the textures are rich. My wife, had the Belgian waffle with the added chicken. Fantastic. The waffle is crisp but not hard and the chicken is well seasoned and whatever they batter the chicken in is light, crispy, and magnificently flavored. And then our waitress Ella brought over some Sriracha honey sauce paired phenomenally with the chicken, giving it a sweet and spicy kick. I find it hard to reward a lot of places with high praise because often I can cook better at home and don’t have to pay an exorbitant price. I come here for breakfast because it’s marvelous and I didn’t have to cook it.

We had our wedding at the Root Cellar Cafe in their beautiful Uproot event space — and it was truly perfect! It was actually the first wedding ever held in that space, and we feel so lucky to have been a part of that milestone. From start to finish, the experience was incredible. The space was cozy, elegant, and just right for our intimate 3-hour celebration (20 people). Aubrey, the private event manager, was absolutely amazing to work with. She communicated clearly, listened to our ideas, and adjusted everything to match our vision. Her attention to detail, warmth, and professionalism made planning so much easier and stress-free. We also want to give a huge shoutout to the entire team who served during the event — they were wonderful! Attentive, kind, and incredibly efficient, they made sure everything ran smoothly and that our guests were taken care of throughout the evening. Everyone worked together seamlessly to create the most relaxed, joyful, and memorable experience for us. The food was absolutely perfect — delicious, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully customized to accommodate all of our guests’ dietary restrictions without any issues. Thank you to Aubrey and the entire Root Cellar team for making our wedding day so special. Highly recommend this hidden gem in San Marcos for any private event!
